Background
A three-partner boutique law firm specializing in real estate and business law had earned a strong reputation through referrals over 10 years. But when potential clients searched online, they were invisible.
Their website was a static brochure with no educational content, no blog, and almost no rankings outside of branded searches.
The Challenge
Legal content is competitive. Large firms with established domain authority dominate many keywords. Going head-to-head for “real estate lawyer Toronto” on day one wasn’t realistic.
Our approach: build topical authority on niche, high-intent questions where competition was lower, and use that authority to push into more competitive terms over time.
The Strategy
Phase 1: Technical Foundation (Month 1)
Before producing content, we fixed the infrastructure:
- Migrated the site to a faster, static architecture
- Added proper schema markup (LocalBusiness, LegalService, FAQPage)
- Established a content hub structure with pillar pages and cluster articles
- Fixed all crawl errors and canonicalization issues
Phase 2: Content Cluster Build (Months 2-5)
We identified 4 topic clusters based on keyword research and client intake data:
- Residential real estate transactions — buying, selling, closing, title issues
- Commercial lease review — small business focus
- Business incorporation — Ontario-specific process guides
- Contract disputes — what clients needed to know before calling
Within each cluster, we wrote:
- 1 pillar page (2,500-3,500 words)
- 3-4 cluster articles (1,000-1,500 words each)
- Corresponding FAQ sections with schema
Phase 3: Local Visibility (Month 3 onward)
Updated and fully optimized Google Business Profile. Built local citations. Created city-specific service pages for the 4 jurisdictions they primarily served.
Results at 6 Months
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound enquiries/month | ~12 | ~23 |
| Organic sessions/month | 180 | 756 |
| Ranking keywords (top 10) | 4 | 87 |
| GBP impressions/month | 340 | 1,820 |
The firm was ranking on page 1 for 14 of their target keywords by month 6, including several mid-tail terms they’d never previously appeared for.
Key Takeaway
For professional service firms, content strategy delivers compounding returns that no paid channel can match. A well-structured article written in month 3 is still generating qualified enquiries today.
